How to Live Beautifully at Home

First blog post! No pressure, right? Unless… is anyone even reading this? Please say hello — the Internet can be a lonely place! If you’re interested, here’s a little bit about me.

Ok, so, back to my first blog post. I thought it was only appropriate to talk about living beautifully, because that’s so much of what I want this blog to represent. I think living beautifully is a state of mind as much as it is about style. It’s about treating yourself to little luxuries and relishing in the comforts of home. Here are a few things I’ve learned about creating a space you’ll absolutely love spending time in…

Decorate with things that make you smile. Your home should make you happy! In our house, that means pom-poms and tassels and pretty pops of colour are always welcome. I also love keeping things with sentimental meaning on display, like a keepsake box from my parents and wedding photos in gifted gold frames.

Embrace imperfections. The Japanese have mastered this idea with design concepts like wabi-sabi and kintsugi, views centered around the idea that there is beauty in the imperfect, the old and the broken. I love decorating with natural materials that weather or patina as they age, like unlacquered brass, rumply linen and marble. They seem to have a personality all their own, since no two objects will age exactly the same. My collection of brass candlesticks and vintage apothecary bottles sits atop my mantle it brings so much soul to my space. After all, no one is perfect, so why should our things be?

Surround yourself with colours that speak to you. Pay attention to what colours you gravitate towards, and bring them into your home. Maybe you feel most at ease in an all-white space, or perhaps cool tones like green and blue bring you a sense of Zen (totally me!). Whatever hues bring you happiness, let them guide your decorating decisions.

Set the mood. Living beautifully is so much more than having a space that represents your style. It’s about lighting candles in the fall and letting the light flood in during the summer. It’s about playing music while you cook (I love listening to Nancy Meyers movie soundtracks) and having a pile of throws at the ready in the winter. The Danes got it right with the idea of hygge (pronounced hue-gah). If you’re not familiar with this term, it’s all about creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. That sounds pretty perfect to me!

Put comfort first. The days of formal living rooms and don’t-touch decor are over. So many of us are living in small spaces, and our homes need to work harder for us than ever before. When decorating, think about how you’ll use your space and take it from there. Love watching TV in bed? Consider a plush upholstered headboard. Have an all-in-one living room/TV room/family room? Your chairs better be sink-into-me comfortable! Style and function go hand-in-hand, and you shouldn’t have to compromise on either.

Ok, are you a homebody yet? If you have any other ideas to share, I’d love to hear them!

I love your home and style. May I ask where is your sofa purchased from? I love how you broke up the space by making it a more functional area. I need to do this in my home. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home!

Your home is lovely. I’m wondering if you can tell me where you got the bookshelf/book spine that is beside the fireplace. I’ve been looking for something similar but haven’t had much luck.
